y cuerpo a cuerpo.
Rapoport. The objective of this study is to verify the differences described in the literature
between the waves of terrorism described by David Rapoport. Specifically, the study analyses
the characteristics that distinguish the third wave, or new left wave, and the fourth wave,
or religious wave. A series of hypotheses were proposed and tested through the analysis of a
database of terrorist attacks from 1970 to 2017. The literature predicts that this terrorism,
in contrast to the previous wave, is characterized by occurring in the Middle East, North
Africa, and South Asia. In addition, there is a greater presence of suicide attacks. Its
methods consist of explosions and armed assaults, usually targeting private property. The
weapons mainly used are explosives, firearms, and hand-to-hand combat. Finally, it is the most lethal wave. Analysis of the database confirms that fourth wave terrorism is religiously
based terrorism that meets the characteristics outlined by Rapoport.
