This study analyzes the social ascent of the Bernuy family, converso merchants, in early
modern Spain. It examines how they constructed a noble identity through communicative
strategies, documentary practices, and institutional networks. The analysis of unpublished
correspondence, inquisitorial records, and practices of exposed writing reveals the mechanisms of identity negotiation employed by this family to overcome their patriarch’s condemnation and consolidate their social position.
