Writing was part of everyday life in modern female cloisters and, in the relationships between confessors and nuns, it came to play an important role through what is known as
«mandatory writing». This paper examines the reactions that this mandate elicited in nuns
and analyse three cases that show three different reactions: acceptance and vocation, resistance and submission, and refusal and rejection. Their study allows us to consider the
diversity of responses that these mandates entailed.
