Abstract

The end of the 19th century witnessed a growing interest in the Género Chico of the zarzuela, which led to the appearance of numerous theatres devoted to this entertainment for the new social classes. In Granada, we find one of these examples with the arrival in the capital of a stage infrastructure from Gibraltar, owned by Jaime Benatar and which would take the name of Teatro Alhambra. In this paper, we will analyse the details and problems of its arrival in the city, we will observe the companies and artists of its first season and we will examine the impact it produced in the cultural sphere of Granada at the end of the 19th century.
