Abstract

This paper analyzes the discourse of the prosecutor who questioned Tracy Edwards, the victim of an attempted murder perpetrated by Jeffrey Dahmer. The initial hypothesis is that the prosecutor's discourse will reveal a strategic process of judicializing the witness's account, aiming to guide his responses and help him construct a credible narrative for the jury that is not limited to the objective narration of facts. The main objective is to analyze how the judicial system limits the spontaneity of testimony and co-constructs a narrative tailored to institutional requirements. To achieve this, a qualitative analysis of the questions will be combined with data obtained from the corpus analysis tool Sketch Engine. The results show that, within the context of the existing power asymmetry between the interlocutors, language actively acts as an instrument of control over the prosecution's linguistic choices when interrogating the witness, aiming to highlight the victim's lack of agency and to underscore the oppressive environment and the extreme violence of his attacker.
