Background: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) has transformed Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL), but its pedagogical validity at beginner levels (A1.1) requires empirical verification. Objectives: To analyze the communicative effectiveness and perception of German I students when interacting with conversational assistants of varying technological complexity. Methods: 48 students interacted with three tools: a deterministic chatbot and two Large Language Models (LLMs) in different environments, evaluated using an adapted validated questionnaire. Results: The rigidity of rule-based systems caused constant communicative breakdowns and frustration. LLMs understood and adapted easily, offering an efficient and motivating communicative environment. External factors such as the response latency of one of the bots penalized usability. Conclusions: Generative AI provides superior communicative and motivational support for autonomous practice. Its pedagogical success depends not only on the sophistication of the linguistic engine, but also on other external factors such as the technical fluency of its deployment environment.es_ES
