Although there are training programs with guidelines to carry out “mediations” oriented to
family practice and which underlyingly link interculturality and the best interests of the child,
the reality is that few studies have evaluated the presence of both approaches (intercultural
and the best interest of the child) and less frequently those that evaluate their effectiveness
or implementation in practice.
It is necessary to evaluate the challenges faced by family mediators in intercultural contexts,
in order to establish new training strategies and to include in the modules of their programs,
subjects and effective practices.
In this paper a theoretical approach to intercultural family mediation and an exploratory study
of the training programs for mediators that include the perspective of interculturality and the
best interests of the child, offered by some public and private universities of the 17
autonomous communities of Spain, as well as some institutions and non-governmental
organizations that work directly with intercultural children and families, culminating with
the proposal of a new program that integrates these perspectives and needs.
