Neverthelesssuch deposits are sometimes the only witness ofearly Palaeolithic occupation. Our inventiveauthors put aside the hammers, acids andexplosives of earlier days, and used quarrytechniques to cut the breccia into smallblocks, which they then freed from their findsin the laboratory, using tools developed inpalaeontology. As a result, they gathered a hugeharvest of stone tools, bones and shells. It allgoes to show that archaeological excavationis an exercise of infinite variety: to everyproblem, its solution; to every terrain, itsmethod.
