Exploring empirical materials collectedduring a seven-year research process (2009-2016),the article has two main objectives. One is to analyzehow low-income youth reflect on their own processesof engagement in communication for social change(CFSC). Another objective is to demonstrate howethnography can provide in-depth analyses oftrajectories and initiatives in CFSC. The article primarilyfocuses on retrospective accounts of young adults whohad participated in media-educational projects by nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) and subsequentlybecame active agents of change in, through and aboutmedia. The analysis of these accounts indicates how theparticipation in NGO projects characterize actions forself-development. It also demonstrates how interactionsamong participants–not necessarily anticipated by NGOs–are crucial for low-income youth to engage in activistmedia and journalism in peripheral Rio de Janeiro. Thearticle ends with a reflection about how ethnography isa useful method to add in-depth qualitative layers to theevaluation of CFSC initiatives.
