The highestchlorophyll concentrations are found at coastal stations in spring duringboth years. Pico and nanophytoplankton are the main contributor tototal chlorophyll, with highest concentrations at the outer limit of thecontinental shelf. Microphytoplankton is responsible for most of theinshore chlorophyll. Picophytoplankton was analyzed to determinedensity, biomass and distribution. Prochlorococcus and Synechococcusshow different distributions depending on distance from the coast anddepth. Our results suggest temperature and consequent waterstratification seem to be the main factors determining deepfluorescence maxima (DFM), mainly formed by picophytoplankton, especially Prochlorococcus. Pigment identification was made to analyzerelative concentrations of larger phytoplankton, helped by CHEMTAXanalysis.
