RT journal article T1 Methodological challenges in the analysis of agrifood systems: a mixed-method approach T2 Retos metodológicos en el análisis de sistemas agroalimentarios: un acercamiento a una metodología mixta   A1 Fernández Zarza, Mario A1 Lozano Cabedo, Carmen A1 Amaya Corchuelo, Santiago A1 Aguilar-Criado, Encarnación A2 Economía General K1 agrifood system K1 Iberian ham K1 Toluca chorizo K1 Intercultural K1 sistema agroalimentario K1 jamón ibérico K1 chorizo de Toluca AB Purpose: The main goal of this paper consists inanalyzing the potential of mixed methods used in thestudy of two agrifood systems: Iberian ham (Spain) andchorizo from the Toluca Valley (Mexico).Research limitations: Opposing cultural contexts thatallowed different strategies to be used which sought notonly to collect information from the diverse actors ineach system but also face the methodological challengesthat currently prevail. These challenges are linked to thediversity of the actors themselves and to the use of newtechnologies for data collection.Methodological design: To solve these methodologicalshortcomings, mixed methods have been implementedwith the support of technological innovations. Results: Results allow us to verify that the employmentof mixed methods is an excellent means for leveraging resources effectively and efficiently. In Spain, employing aself-administered survey enabled rural manufacturers tocontrol the timing of their response. Regarding consumerresults, these prove that collecting data via smartphoneis highly recommended. In the case of Mexico, startingthe research quatitatively allowed the building of trust,a factor which is critical given the levels of violence inMexican society that generate mistrust and, ultimately, lead to a refusal to participate in academic research.Findings: The main contribution of this article is that, based on real and complex cases, it provides evidence ofthe potential and strategies to be followed for analyzingagrifood systems in a cross-cultural research. Mixedmethods emerge as an excellent means for collectingdata in global dynamics.
