RT journal article T1 Civil–Military Patents and Technological Knowledge Flows Into the Leading Defense Firms A1 Acosta Seró, Manuel A1 Coronado Guerrero, Daniel A1 Ferrándiz León, Esther A1 Marín Muñoz, María del Rosario A1 Moreno Rodríguez, Pedro Jesús A2 Economía General K1 dual use K1 mixed technologies K1 military patents K1 defense industry K1 patent citations K1 spin-off K1 spin-in AB Drawing upon 106,181 patent applications by the world’s largest defense firms and241,571 patent citations (2002–2011), this article has two main objectives. The firstis to explore the factors affecting the production of mixed patents (those withpotential dual applications in both military and civilian spheres). The second is toidentify the causes of the use of military knowledge for civilian inventions (spin-off)and the use of civilian knowledge in military patented technologies (spin-in). Ourcalculations show highly significant coefficients for the variables capturing the“military technological capability” and the size of the company in explaining theproduction of mixed technologies. The spin-off process is affected by the militarytechnological capability, the size of the firm, and the location. The spin-in mechanismis explained by the military technological capability and the location of the firm, whilethe size of the company is not relevant.
