Different semiconducting, pure metallic or oxidematerials have been utilized as the core (CdTe, Au, Fe 3 O 4 , or Fe 3 O 4covered with Au) of the nanoparticle, while they have been, in all cases, functionalizedby a thin amorphous glutathione layer, with the goal of using the NPs in biomedicalapplications such as biomarkers, and computerized tomography and image magneticresonance contrast agents. The results show that it is possible to visualize theglutathione layer using spectroscopic and imaging techniques, associated to electronmicroscopy (such as energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and high-resolutiontransmission electron microscopy images), that this layer is present at the surfaces ofall observed nanoparticles, and that it is no thicker than a few nanometers. Electronmicroscopy also revealed that the nanoparticles core are crystalline and, in average, around 5-nm-size PB Springer SN 2190-5517 YR 2020 FD 2020 LK http://hdl.handle.net/10498/34328 UL http://hdl.handle.net/10498/34328 LA eng DS Repositorio Institucional de la Universidad de Cádiz RD 06-nov-2026
