This study, based on the Cambridge Learner Corpus, aims to test the hypothesis that negative transfer from Spanish exists and affects the correct use of English as a target language among Spanish-speaking students. To this end, the study focuses on one of the grammatical categories that poses the greatest challenge for this group: prepositions. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis is conducted, taking into account sociolinguistic variables such as the learners’ proficiency levels according to the CEFR, in order to identify possible patterns in the recurrence of errors. Based on the findings, a teaching unit is proposed with the aim of improving the instruction of English prepositions and addressing common errors caused by language interference.
