RT journal article T1 Integrating Low-Cost Eye-Trackers to Enhance Design Education: A Case Study in University Course A1 Rojas, Juan-Carlos A1 Higuera Trujillo, Juan Luis A1 Vergara, Margarita A2 Ingeniería Mecánica y Diseño Industrial K1 eye-tracker K1 higher education K1 educational innovation K1 low-cost K1 design process AB The integration of technology in the classroom should be based on low-cost devices andaffordable solutions, allowing educators to fully explore their potential benefits. Productdesign education is undergoing a profound transformation in response to these changes. The aim of this study is to demonstrate the integration of low-cost eye-tracking (ET) technologywithin a product design process. This research presents a practical case involvinga group of design students who incorporated an ET device, as well as an alternative trackingmethod (AT) that simulates eye movement, to develop a product following a customdesign methodology. The impact of both the methodology and the low-cost technology wasevaluated through surveys administered to forty-seven students. The evaluation focusedprimarily on “utility, novelty, and relevance” as key aspects. The results showed consistentlyhigh approval ratings for both technologies. However, ET received significantlyhigher and more favorable evaluations. A detailed analysis of the evaluated elementsindicated a strong preference for ET in terms of utility, novelty, and relevance. Furthermore,a correlational analysis revealed that students associated the integration of low-cost technologywith usefulness and a positive experience. The findings of this case study highlight thatlow-cost devices and innovative methodologies are effective tools for enhancing teachingand learning experiences for students, educators, and researchers.
