RT journal article T1 School responses towards children in residential care: A multiple case study through inclusion and trauma-informed lenses A1 Morales-Ocaña, Amelia A1 Pérez-García, Purificación A2 Didáctica K1 Children in care K1 residential care K1 inclusive education K1 trauma-informed schools AB Research has highlighted a significant gap in the academic performanceof children in care compared to their peers. However, relativelyfew studies have placed the role of schools at the centre oftheir analysis. Drawing on inclusive education and the traumainformedschool approach, this article presents a multiple casestudy based on three primary schools that have children in residentialcare among their students. Thematic analysis led to five keythemes: 1) The school context matters, 2) Interventions based onbonding yet lacking structural responses, 3) Academic field undercontrol, although far from inclusion, 4) Difficult behaviours as thebiggest challenge, 5) Need for training and information. Resultshighlight the need for greater awareness and presence in schoolsof inclusion and the trauma-informed school approach. A culturalchange in schools is needed. Training and professional developmentcan contribute to this end by addressing professionals´ attitudesand mindsets. Moreover, the Spanish public educationsystem should review its staffing policies, as frequent teacher turnoverundermines the development of stable and cohesive teachingteams working towards shared values and goals.
