This article analyses the rhetoric epidictic devices used by the historian Juan Cristóbal Calvete de Estrella in his Latin translation (cf. De rebus Indicis, 7, 154, 2–5) of a Spanish chronicle depicting the triumphal entry of the Governor of Peru Cristóbal Vaca de Castro at Cusco (16/09/1542), after his victory over Diego de Almagro el Mozo´s army. It focuses on the analysis of one of the three discourses –an epibatérios lógos– added by Calvete in order to raise the literary quality of the text and to emphasize the persona and status of the governor Vaca de Castro as alter ego of the emperor Charles V.
