Francisco Ugalde Pardo (1901-1978), dibujante de prensa. De retratista de la vida zaragozana a caricaturista teatral

Abstract

Este trabajo es una primera aproximación al estudio de la figura y obra del dibujante Francisco Ugalde Pardo (Tarazona, Zaragoza, 1901-Madrid, 1978). En concreto, se analiza su colaboración gráfica en el periódico zaragozano Heraldo de Aragón (1925-1928), que contaba con unos notables índices de lectura. En febrero de 1929 se trasladó definitivamente a Madrid para incorporarse a la redacción del diario ABC –así como a otras publicaciones–, donde alcanzó un estilo y renombre personal. Este artista ha sido objeto de estudios parciales que se han centrado en su actividad madrileña como caricaturista de teatro, mientras que, por el contrario, poco se sabe de sus inicios en este arte que estaba alcanzando un prestigio creciente. Ugalde fue un excelente caricaturista de una época brillante de nuestro arte dibujístico y gracias a él nos han quedado testimonios de aquellas figuras que protagonizaron la vida ciudadana de su época.

This paper offers an approach to the figure and work of the cartoonist Francisco Ugalde Pardo (Tarazona, Zaragoza, 1901–Madrid, 1978). Specifically, the focus is on his collaboration as a graphic artist for the Zaragoza-based newspaper Heraldo de Aragón (1925-1928), which had a significant number of readers. In February 1929, he moved to Madrid to join the ABCnewspaper—and other publications—where he developed his style and achieved personal renown. The artist has been the object of partial studies focused on his career in Madrid as a theatre caricaturist, while little is known of his roots in this increasingly prestigious art. Ugalde was an excellent caricaturist in a brilliant period of Spanish cartoon art and we owe him the testimony of the figures that attracted the focus of the city life of the time.
