De la espada a la pluma: nuevos datos para la biografía del poeta y dramaturgo José de Cañizares (1694-1750)

Abstract

El presente trabajo da a conocer, mediante su estudio y edición anotada, los documentos relativos a José de Cañizares conservados en el Archivo de la Parroquia de San Martín de Madrid y en el Archivo General de Palacio. Estos documentos presentan los motivos que llevaron al poeta y dramaturgo madrileño a abandonar la carrera militar en 1694 y, al ofrecer datos sobre los inicios de su labor como escritor de letras sagradas para la Corona, arrojan luz sobre un momento clave de su vida, permitiendo de este modo una significativa revisión biográfica. Representan estos nuevos documentos, a su vez, una valiosa fuente de información para el estudio de la administración de una de las principales instituciones palatinas, la Real Capilla, al tiempo que ofrecen claves para comprender la conformación de los campos literario y artístico de corte. Dan muestra, además, de la evolución del estatuto del autor y de su progresiva profesionalización durante la bulliciosa, fascinante y decisiva época de transición situada entre el Barroco y la Ilustración.

This work presents, through its study and annotated edition, the documents relating to José de Cañizares kept in the Archives of the Parish of San Martín in Madrid and in the General Archive of the Royal Palace. These documents present the reasons that led the poet and playwright from Madrid to abandon his military career in 1694 and, by providing information on the beginnings of his work as a writer of sacred poetry for the Crown, shed light on a key moment in his life, thus allowing for a significant biographical review. On the other hand, they represent a valuable source of information for the study of the administration of one of the main palatine institutions, the Royal Chapel, as well as offering keys to understanding the shaping of the literary and artistic fields of the court. They also show the evolution of the status of the author and his progressive professional-isation in the period from the Baroque to the Enlightenment.
