Abstract

Entre 1830 y 1848 muchas cosas cambian en el mundo. Es un periodo de crisis. Por lo que respecta al arte, los Románticos subrayaron la preeminencia del individuo. El retrato se convirtió en un importante género en toda Europa. El gran número de retratos que se hicieron en España durante este periodo revela una crisis particular, relativa a la propaganda política y a la identidad de clase, de género, nacional y familiar, así como a la imagen individual y a la reputación. Este artículo considera la forma y la función del retrato español a través de la tensión dialéctica entre historia y novela, tomadas como metáforas. Historia significa espacio y tiempo, fidelidad narrativa y, por lo general, papel político. Novela se refiere al sentimiento y a la imaginación.

From 1830 to 1848 many things change in the world. It is period of crisis. As regard to art, the Romantics asserted the prominence of the individual. Portrait painting became an important genre all over Europe. The large number of portraits that were made in Spain during this period reveals a particular crisis, regarding to political propaganda and class, genre, national and family identity, as well as individual image and reputation. This paper considers form and function in Spanish portrait through the dialectical tension between History and Novel, taken as metaphors. History means space and time, narrative fidelity and usually political role. Novel concerns to sentiment and imagination.
