Abstract

This work analyses the operation of a Frequency Modulated ContinuousWave (FMCW) radar going in depth into the mathematics basis that lies behind. The radar signals are made of piecewise linear and periodic frequency modulations. We carry out a detailed study of the signal processing used here. Moreover, we aim to detect the range to the receiver and the detected target, and if it is a fixed or a moving point. The system “mixes” the transmitted signal and the received signal, which is just a translation of the transmitted signal. Thus the mixed signal, which is the product of both, is analyzed. Hence we determine the range R and the velocity of the target v through an algorithm based on two stages (double process of FFT). Furthermore, we have to take into consideration the amount of noise that is presented with the signal. Some basic aspects of this issue will be discussed. Some ilustrations are provided on the theorical contents with examples that we have considered of interest.
