Investigación y gestión del Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático en las Islas Baleares: la Carta Arqueológica Subacuática de Formentera y el pecio romano de Porto Cristo

Abstract

En los últimos años se ha puesto de manifiesto la desprotección del Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático y su fragilidad como factores de deterioro acelerado del mismo. La necesidad de aunar investigación, protección y difusión de este rico Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático de forma sistemática y eficaz se hace imprescindible de cara a su gestión. Las Islas Baleares muestran en este aspecto una singularidad, aunque la historiografía refleja actuaciones desde momentos tempranos en yacimientos subacuáticos relevantes, la falta de medios especializados volcados a su gestión sigue sorprendiendo. Desde el año 2014 el Instituto Balear de Estudios en Arqueología Marítima (IBEAM) establece un planteamiento de actividad sistemática investigadora en el área balear bajo los preceptos de la convención de la UNESCO 2001. Dos proyectos enmarcan las líneas de actuación propuestas sobre el Patrimonio Cultural Subacuático Balear, la Carta Arqueológica Subacuática de Formentera como modelo de gestión y protección y la excavación del pecio romano de Porto Cristo como propuesta de preservación.

Despite the long tradition in the field of underwater cultural heritage in the Balearic Islands with early experiences during the 70’s and relevant sites as we found in the literature review, is remarkable how this archipelago is still missing a management and research plan to understand, protect and disseminate its Underwater Cultural Heritage. Over the last few years we have seen a cultural heritage under the sea absolutely unprotected, being exposed to deterioration and having an important damage in consequence. From 2014 the Instituto Balear de Estudios en Arqueología Marítima (IBEAM) is developing a proposal research based on UNESCO 2001 convention precepts. Two projects are being developed to understand the proposal approach in the management of the Underwater Cultural Heritage at the Balearic context, Formentera Underwater Archaeology Survey Map in one hand, as a model of protection and cultural management; and in the other hand Porto Cristo shipwreck as a research activity centred in the archaeological excavation, record and the “in situ” preservation process.
