Abstract

Music in Guatemala has experienced considerable growth in the 21st century. All musical genres and practices have witnessed significant expansion compared with the immediate past in terms of musicians, activities, venues, educational opportunities, technological tools and youth participation movements. However, this quantitative and qualitative development has not been paralleled by public investment, which is decidedly lacklustre, or by private investment, which does not promote initiatives where aesthetic projects prevail over market demands and brands. Neither has there been a substantial improvement in professional musicians’ fees or in material recompense for key representatives of national art. It could therefore be argued that music in Guatemala has travelled far in the last two decades but has not necessarily advanced.
