Abstract

This paper analyses the time and the collective memory of the moving image and its manipulation as conceptual resource in the work of Stan Douglas. The analysis is based on the specific characteristics of the type of artistic production of the new time-based media, i.e. those artworks that rely on technology and the temporal duration as interpretive dimension. In the specific case of Stan Douglas we set a dialectical discussion of collective memories and technological obsolescence visual media such as television and cinema, in order to represent the culture and performance of memory. Thus in the first section we delve into one of his feature works, a representation of a city in crisis Le Detroit, representing the failed utopia. We analyse a second work Inconsolable Memories as a rewriting of memory and recombination of historical narratives and collective memory in cinema. In the last analysed work Monodramas, one of his first works on media, it is stand out the speculation and the setback of the reception of mass media such as television.
