Abstract

This work attempts to analyze the representations of aging present in print advertisements. In this context, work is particularly focused on the identification of gender stereotypes in old age. To perform the proposed objective, print advertisements, in which images of middle-aged and older men and women appeared, were analyzed and compared. The documentary corpus was composed of 70 images selected from the survey of 192 numbers of three Argentine graphic sources: Viva, La Nación and Gente magazines (year 2000 and 2010). The methodological approach was qualitative following the guidelines of content analysis. The results show a difference in the quality and content of the ads, showing a gender bias where male images predominate. Some female models are associated with “traditional” roles while male connote aspects as job success, wisdom, seduction and experience. In summary, the findings conclude that advertising is far from reflecting the diversity in the ageing ways of the world today.
