Abstract

The experimental determination of the universal constant R for gases, based on the equation of ideal gas state, pV=nRT, is a classic chemistry experiment in which a known amount of gas is generated through a chemical reaction and its pressure, volume, and temperature are measured. In this work we present an alternative, simple and fast procedure, consisting of introducing pressurized air into a plastic bottle, maintaining volume and temperature constants and letting out gradually in stages the internal air, measuring both the internal pressure and the mass of the bottle with its content. This procedure provides an acceptable value for R without the need to use specific laboratory material and without generating any type of waste, since only air at room temperature is used.
