Abstract

Introduction: Occasionally, labor induction may fail, being unable to achieve regular and effective cervical contractions and / or cervical modifications. When this happens, the next step to take will be a cesarean section. The main objective of this study is to determine which factors are associated with an increased risk of failure of an induction. Objective: With this research project we have evaluated which are the factors that are associated with an increase or a decrease in risk, so that an induction of labor fails and ends in cesarean section. In this way, we have developed a predictive model of labor induction failure. Methods: This is an analytical observational study of historical cohorts, where the sample was obtained from pregnant women whose pregnancy and delivery were attended at the Obstetrics and Gynecology Service of the Puerto Real University Hospital. The data obtained were entered into a table, from which we extracted the variables included in the study and were imported by the R statistical program for analysis. The predictive model was developed using a multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results and conclusion: We observe that those patients who are older are at greater risk of having a failed induction of labor than those who are younger. Similarly, it was observed that nulliparous patients had a higher risk of failure of labor induction, compared to secondary or multiparous patients. Furthermore, patients who have a previous cesarean section are more likely to have failed induction of labor than a patient who does not have a previous cesarean section. Finally, patients who are overweight or obese are more likely to fail their induction of labor compared to a patient who is normal weight.
