Abstract

The research that concerns us aims to record the beliefs that exist around the processes of literary enjoyment in an educational community (families, teachers, and young people) of young people with Down Syndrome. To advance in the line of literary enjoyment and respond to the other objective of the research, a literary action program has been designed, planned, and implemented, a program designed for a group of young people between 20 and 31 years old with Down Syndrome to enjoy literary reading and creative writing. This action research establishes links with the Research Project How is literary reading and creative writing developed in people with intellectual disabilities? One more step towards the Rights Approach, directed by Dr. Marcela Jarpa Azagra of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (Chile). Considering the participatory action of the research, several phases have been developed simultaneously, according to Francés et al. (2015) it is of vital importance the flexibility between the availability of the participants and the needs of the research. Throughout the process it is intended to collect quality data that allow to describe and identify the beliefs of the collective around literary enjoyment, it is necessary that this information is relevant to respond to the objectives of the research (Patton, 1990). The design of the intervention program is carried out from an inclusive approach in which a group of young people with Down Syndrome can access literature as a right to enjoyment, as another opportunity to enrich their leisure time and, also, as a gateway to culture. The research is developed in an Association of families with sons and daughters with Down Syndrome (DS), specifically Cedown Jerez. The theoretical framework of the research analyzes the characteristics of people with DS, as well as the importance of emerging reading and writing, mediation, and the benefits of literary enjoyment. The collection and analysis of the data have been another of the strengths of the research, thanks to the size of the information the analysis has been decisive when making the research report. The latter has allowed significant conclusions to be reached around the possibility that young people with DS can consider literary reading and creative writing as an option in their leisure time. The conclusions also present an analysis of Weaknesses, Threats, Strengths and Opportunities (SWOT), as well as a CAME analysis to propose improvements. The work is concluded with the list of bibliographic references used.
