ShipSafe-Termonto Dataset

Abstract

SHIPSAFE-Termonto dataset is a database that collects the ontological representation and organisation of a corpus-based terminological database on shipboard life-saving appliances. This is a subdomain of a broader topic area, maritime safety. The dataset has been used to develop a term-ontographic resource, ShipSafe: A Termontological E-Glossary of the Life-Saving Appliances Aboard a Ship (English-Spanish), Glossary, that offers a digital approach and an application of language technologies to specialised communication. Its theoretical-methodological foundations are the Communicative Theory of Terminology (Cabre, 1999) and The Function Theory of Lexicography (Bergenholtz y Tarp, 2002). The empirical study was focused on one of the lines of enquiry of Natural Language Processing for terminography, the application of ontologies concerned with terminological resources. The research methodology for data analysis was mainly guided by the extraction of knowledge patterns and by a combination of a top-down and a bottom-up approach. As the term-ontology is of a terminological and domain type, the nouns are the only part of speech that SHIPSAFE contains. SHIPSAFE is intended to supply the terminology needs of professionals of the maritime sector, in general, and of language specialists, in particular, such as specialised translators and interpreters, linguists, technical writers, ESP teachers, researchers and students of Maritime English and of anyone interested in maritime terminology in English and Spanish languages. It shows authentic samples of language use extracted from an ad hoc parallel corpus ShipSAFE, which was specially compiled and is divided into an English subcorpus, ShipSAFE-EN, which contains 29 documents and 65 600 running words, and a Spanish subcorpus ShipSAFE-ES, with 23 documents and 42 650 running words. The chronological period covered by the corpus documents extends from 1980 to 2021. ShipSafe attemps to offer a macrostructural design that illustrates the conceptual organisation of the life-saving appliances’ subdomain and a microstructural design of the term entry that allows for a clear, complete and precise portrait of the term in context in English and Spanish. Besides, by singling up the essential terms in this sub-domain, teachers of specialised languages in this field can be oriented towards which terms to teach in the English for Specific Purposes’ classes. Furthermore, the teachers can exploit the material for the contrastive study of the language or for other pedagogical purposes.
