The Dating System as an Element to Determine the Linguistic Contact, Attitudes and Ideologies in the Hispanic Press (United States, 1848-1899)

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse an unusual type of interlinguistic transfer: the dating system. This transfer was found in a corpus made of several newspapers written by Spanish speakers (Mexicans, Spaniards and Cubans) during the second half of the 19th century in different places in the United States (California, New Mexico, Texas and New York). The results obtained will contribute to understanding how contact between English and Spanish took place in those territories. Likewise, the exposition of this particular phenomenon also shows how the existing dichotomy between the maintenance of the Hispanic identity and the American assimilation by matters of prestige materializes into a cultural convention such as the dating system.

Este trabajo tiene el objetivo principal de analizar un tipo de transferencia interlingüística inusual encontrada en un corpus de periódicos escritos por hispanohablantes (mexicanos, españoles y cubanos) en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX en diferentes lugares de los Estados Unidos (California, Nuevo México, Texas y Nueva York): el sistema de datación. Los resultados que se obtengan contribuirán a comprender cómo se produce el contacto entre el inglés y el español en estos territorios. Asimismo, la exposición de este fenómeno particular también da cuenta de cómo la dicotomía existente entre el mantenimiento de la identidad hispana y la asimilación al sistema estadounidense de prestigio traspasa lo lingüístico y se materializa en una convención cultural como es escribir la fecha en documentos escritos.
