Xiao et al. have added to the growing body of evidence that cultivated grapes have received genes from wild populations. Their conclusion on the adaptive and maladaptive outcome of introgression in grapevines is valid, but due to the inclusion in their analyses of highly admixed genotypes, which are likely the result of recent hybridizations, their findings regarding introgression cannot be strictly associated with historical migration of cultivated grapevines to Western Europe during the earliest stages of domestication.
