Poor communication jeopardizes biodiversity

Abstract

A lappet-faced vulture (Torgos tracheliotos), listed as endangered by the IUCN, in East Africa. The use of multiple techniques can improve understanding of population trends. Kendall et al. (e14146) used telemetry, analyzed with Bayesian models, and transect counts, combined with Leslie Lefkovitch models, in a study of vulture populations in Tanzanian protected areas. They found that even with a relatively small sample size, telemetry and transect data illuminated short-term population trends and that vultures, including the lappet-faced vulture, and other scavenging raptors are declining significantly in southern Tanzania.
