manual Valuation: measuring and managing the value of companies (McKinsey & Company,
Koller, T., Goedhart, M., & Wessels, D).
This paper conducts a fundamental analysis of the Chinese company Alibaba Group Holding
Limited. The objective is to obtain an estimate of the intrinsic value of its stock in order to
evaluate it as an investment opportunity, given the low price at which it is currently trading.
The first part of the analysis focuses on qualitative information, which provides a picture of
the quality of the company's business and its likely future development. Information on the
company, the sector and the macro-environment in which it operates is analysed. The
second part analyses the company's financial information provided by its publicly available
financial statements. It mainly studies the evolution of the key variables of value generation,
as referred to by McKinsey in the handbook Valuation: measuring and managing the value of
companies. These are: revenue growth, returns on invested capital and cost of capital. The
conclusions obtained are used to estimate the value of the company using the discounted
cash flow method. The result of the valuation suggests that, at the date of this study, the
company's share price is trading at a significant discount to its intrinsic value.
