Abstract

Yeísmo is a linguistic change of a phonetic and phonological nature which consists of the replacement of the palatal lateral phoneme [ ] by the palatal approximant [j]. This phenomenon is ʎ present in Spanish, not only in Spain, but also in America; that is why in this work I will focus on the emergence of yeísmo in the speech of Spanish-speaking people from Hispanic America. In order to do so, I have compiled several audio recordings of speakers from different geographical origins within Hispanic America, which will allow for determining the presence of the yeísta phenomenon in their speech. Thus, I will be able to study whether the appearance of yeísmo and its different types is conditioned by linguistic and extralinguistic factors and I will also investigate if my findings coincide with the statements of numerous existing studies on the actuality of this phenomenon in American Spanish.
