Abstract

The lyrical sisterhood of nineteenth-century women writers is based on the need to build a public image in the face of the patriarchal cultural system, which relegated women to the domestic sphere. Epistolary letters often offer privileged information by revealing the private dimension of the authors or confidential judgments about their colleagues. This is the case of the letters addressed by Pilar Sinués de Marco to Antonia Díaz de Lamarque. In them, on the one hand, the biographical fabulation constructed by Emilia Serrano, Baroness of Wilson, is dismantled, both for the opinions expressed about the character and for offering the keys to reading one of Sinués’ novels, La senda de la gloria (1863); on the other hand, Sinués confesses to Díaz the causes and circumstances of her marital breakup. The epistles reveal the mechanisms and strategies of concealment of intimacy, necessary to maintain a relevant position in the literary field, and also expose the contrived nature of sorority.
