Abstract

The book focuses on the history of the San José Hospital in San Fernando (formerly known as Isla de León) and its role in local healthcare. The author’s study builds on a prior, unpublished thesis from 1989 and uses numerous public and private archives to fill a gap in the knowledge of the region’s health history. The hospital, founded in 1767 by the Bishop of Cádiz and Algeciras, Tomás del Valle, was established to serve the growing population of Isla de León and people in transit. It treated all types of patients until the construction of San Carlos Hospital in 1809. Throughout its history, the hospital faced economic crises due to epidemics and wars. It played a crucial role during the Spanish War of Independence, the Cantonal Insurrection of 1873, and various epidemics, such as cholera and typhus exanthematicus. The hospital staff included chaplains, senior nurses, and Carmelite Sisters of Charity. The text details the use of the pharmacy, therapeutics, and surgical treatments of the era, noting that the hospital’s apothecary depended on the Royal Hospital of Cádiz. The book also includes studies from patient record books to analyze the evolution of pathologies and causes of death. In 1916, a room was set up as a First Aid Post, where medical assistants primarily treated trauma. The hospital continued to operate until 1956 when it became the "San José Patronage Residence for the Elderly".
