Ecolinguistics and its didactic application

Abstract

As university language instructors, we cannot remain oblivious to reality or the issues that concern humanity. We owe it to our students to provide them with the necessary tools to reflect on and debate cu-rrent topics, such as ecology and the environment. According to a Greenpeace report, Spain is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change (Greenpeace Spain, 2020). The question we ask ourse-lves is how we can promote environmental awareness in foreign lan-guage classes. The objective of this article is, firstly, to reflect from an ecolinguistic perspective on the interactions between language (or communication) and ecology and, secondly, to contribute to raising awareness and sensitizing our students to the environment through language didactics.
