Abstract

This paper reconstructs the genesis of two poems written by Manuel Machado in 1935: «La Manzanilla» and «Preludio al Rincón de sol». To this end, the literary connection of Manuel Machado with manzanilla wine, his friendship with Julio Asquerino Romo and his complicity in wine and poetry with Manuel Barbadillo Rodríguez are analyzed based on the correspondence preserved between them. Our appreciations shall be based on the correspondence preserved between Machado, Asquerino and Barbadillo. Firstly, we will explore Asquerino’s work at the forefront of Guía Oficial de Sanlúcar (1927-1935), where Machado published his «Canto a Andalucía» and the poem «Mi vino», later titled «La Manzanilla». Secondly, we will discuss Asquerino’s role in facilitating the publication of Barbadillo’s first poetry book, Rincón de sol (1936), and Machado’s sponsorship through the writing of a poem that serves as a prologue to the book, «Preludio al Rincón de sol».
