Abstract
Characterizing the solvability of bipolar equations in the unit interval. Contemporary Mathematics, 2026.

This work is framed within the theory of bipolar equations. These equations are defined in terms of a composition operator, generally given by an adjoint pair, and a negation operator. Their solvability has been extensively studied over the past decade, constituting a discipline of important academic relevance. This manuscript addresses an open research line that is focused on the solvability of bipolar equations defined on the unit interval. In Chapter 1, the research field covered in this work is introduced and motivated. In Chapter 2, some preliminary notions and results that will be of particular relevance to the development of this manuscript are presented. In Chapter 3, the concepts of bipolar fuzzy relation equations and bipolar equations are introduced. Furthermore, elementary properties are established for bipolar equations defined on the unit interval. In Chapter 4, the solvability of bipolar equations is addressed by imposing conditions exclusively on the negation operator, that is, from a perspective independent of the adjoint pair. Specifically, using different approaches, the solvability of families of bipolar equations defined with bijective negations and of those defined with a continuous or, equivalently, surjective negation, is characterized. In Chapter 5, the solvability of bipolar equations is studied in terms of the adjoint pair under consideration, without imposing conditions on the negation operator. In particular, the solvability of bipolar equations defined with an adjoint pair with a continuous and injective right partial function is addressed. In Chapter 6, left bipolar equations are introduced, and all results previously obtained for bipolar equations are extended to these new equations. The contributions made in Chapters 4,5 and 6 are original, were developed through the research conducted in this work, and have been published in the following article: D. Lobo, P. López-Molina. Characterizing the solvability of bipolar equations in the unit interval. Contemporary Mathematics, 2026. Moreover, these contributions have been presented as an oral communication at the international conference: 17th European Symposium on Computational Intelligence and Mathematics (ESCIM~2026), held in Timișoara, Romania. Chapter 7 is devoted to concluding the manuscript and presenting some open fields for future research. In Appendix, a Python implementation is presented that integrates the results obtained in this work, providing an automated tool for the computational resolution of bipolar equations.
