Revisión de algunas ideas sobre política e ideología lingüísticas en el siglo XVIII español

Abstract

En este artículo se toman como base los estudios de Francisco Sánchez-Blanco para analizar la relación entre la política del absolutismo y la ideología de la Ilustración, por un lado, y la legislación lingüística y las relaciones entre las diversas comunidades lingüísticas en el seno de la monarquía española a lo largo del siglo XVIII. Tras establecer las diferencias entre Ilustración y conceptos tales como absolutismo o nacionalismo y un examen detenido de las circunstancias que se dan tanto en América como en la Península (dominios lingüísticos catalán, gallego y vasco), se postula el concepto de «estatismo», debido a Peter Burke, como el más adecuado para explicar la actuación de los gobernantes borbónicos durante el período indicado, aunque solo un examen más detenido permitirá comprobar que es pertinente la aplicación a la segunda mitad del XVIII del concepto de «nacionalismo» en el ámbito de la política lingüística.

In the present article, studies carried out by Francisco Sánchez-Blanco are used in order to analyze the existent relationship, on one hand, between the politics of the Absolutism and the ideology of the Enlightenment and, on the other hand, between the language policy and the connections among the wide range of linguistic communities within the Spanish monarchy during the XVIIIth century. After establishing the differences between Enlightenment and other concepts such as Absolutism or Nationalism, and a thorough study of the circumstances given not only in America but also in the Iberian peninsula (Catalan, Galician and Basque linguistic areas), the next step was to analyze the concept of «Statism» in the work of Burke in order to explain the measures taken by the kings of the Bourbon dynasty during the period mentioned above. However, an even more in-depth study will allow us to prove the appropriateness of the concept «Nationalism» regarding language policy when referring to the second half of the XVIIIth century.
