La salud es un derecho humano básico

Abstract

La salud es un derecho no una mercancía. Las instituciones tienen la obligación de procurar el acceso a la salud. La salud no es sólo la ausencia de enfermedad sino el estado de plenitud física, psíquica y social. Ello condiciona que existan determinantes sociales que influyen de forma decisiva en los niveles de salud. La crisis, los recortes y la austeridad han condicionado un aumento escandaloso de los niveles de desempleo, de pobreza y han disminuido mucho las personas de clase media. Las desigualdades sociales han aumentado de forma notable y ello significa peores niveles de salud. La acción política en el ámbito municipal puede ser una oportunidad para hacer disminuir estas desigualdades sociales y mejorar la salubridad de nuestros barrios y ciudades. Los movimientos sociales y ciudadanos tienen que comprometerse con los ayuntamientos para conseguir estos inexcusables objetivos.

Health is a right not a commodity. Institutions have an obligation to ensure access to health. Health is not merely the absence of disease but a state of full physical, mental and social. This determines that there are social determinants that influence decisively in health levels. The crisis and austerity cuts have led to a shocking rise in unemployment, poverty and have greatly diminished middle-class people. Social inequalities have increased significantly and this means worse health. Political action at the municipal level can be an opportunity to reduce these inequalities and improve the health of our neighborhoods and cities. Social movements and citizens have to engage with municipalities to achieve these objectives inexcusable.
