Un andaluz escribiendo sobre la historia de Sicilia: el ‘De Syracusanorum stratagemmatis’ de Cristóbal Escobar

Abstract

Cristóbal Escobar, humanista andaluz que pasó la mayor parte de su vida en Sicilia, publicó un volumen que contiene diferentes opúsculos dedicados fundamentalmente a la historia local de Siracusa. Uno de ellos, el De Syracusanorum stratagemmatis, es una recopilación de estratagemas en las que la ciudad de Siracusa es testigo del ingenio de una serie de personajes ilustres de la historia griega y romana. Junto al texto traducido, se incluye el estudio y traducción de la epístola dedicatoria del volumen, clave para comprender el sentido del trabajo de Escobar.

Cristóbal Escobar, an Andalusian humanist who spent the main part of his life in Sicily, published a volume that contains some opuscula dedicated to the local history of Syracuse. One of them, the De Syracusanorum stratagemmatis, is a stratagems' summary where Syracuse is the theatre of many Greek and Roman historical figures' wit. Besides, it is included the study and the translation of the dedicatory epistle about this volume, a key element to understand the meaning of Escobar's work.
