Within the framework of the Self-Determination Theory, this research explores the role of the family before the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 (sustainable production and consumption) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Specifically, it studies the relationship between parental achievement goals and pro-sustainability behaviors of adolescents, focusing attention on the behaviors of reducing, reusing and recycling (rule of the 3 Rs). The research assumes a quantitative, descriptive and correlational design. This research took place in the city of Cuenca (Ecuador), with a sample made up of 1056 adolescents (47 % women, 53% men), aged between 14-18 years old and their parents that correspond to a number of 1692 (56% mothers, 44% fathers), aged between 35 and 64 years old. The two instruments applied were, parental scale of achievement-oriented goals, adaptation of the Parental Achievement Goals and pro-sustainability behaviors. The results confirm the relationship between the factors subjected to non-parametric analysis with the Mann Whitney U technique and Spearman´s Correlation and, consequently, point to the family as an agent related to change for sustainability, capable of actively contributing in the achievement of SDG 12 through the parental achievement targets.es_ES
