Resumen
In the following sections we address the challenges of ICT-based pedagogy to the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) classroom in general, and the ME classroom in particular. First, some key issues on ICT-based pedagogy and vocabulary instruction are analysed: the different ways vocabulary is learnt and taught, the definitions of specialised vocabulary in general and of ME vocabulary in particular, the meaning and implications of digital literacy, the role of computers in enhancing vocabulary learning, and the construct of lifelong learning as a particular ESHE requirement. Secondly, some relevant publications are reviewed with particular reference to recurrent topics in this paper – i.e. computer-based vocabulary teaching/learning, ICTs and specialised languages, and learning auton omy. Then, we examine the Moodle glossary tool, a specifi c computer-based academic platform at the University virtual campus, and how it can be implemented in view of strategic ME vocabulary development. We provide a detailed account of the creation of the Maritime Glossary (a project aimed to complement classroom work) and, finally, discuss learners’ opinions based on a questionnaire admin istered upon the completion of the glossary and interviews held at the end of the course.
