Abstract

The aim of this paper is to analyse the various digital editions of the Diccionario de la lengua española, published by RAE and ASALE, to identify their electronic features, find the missing ones and the features that have changed from one version to another. The paper is structured in three sections: the first one deals with the theoretical approach to digital lexicography and the origin of the Diccionario de la lengua española, reviewing the various editions of the dictionary published in printed format, and its exclusively digital editions, which correspond to the 21st, 22nd and 23rd, with their various versions and updates (cf. Section 2); the second section focuses on the methodology, as well as the coding system used (cf. Section 3); and the final one compares the various digital editions of the Diccionario (cf. Section 4). The comparative analysis has been organised into the following categories: one, electronic versions in CD format, which appeared earlier; two, editions with web access, which are the most complete and originated from the original CD versions; and mobile applications, which are somewhere between the former, as they need to be installed, and the latter, as they provide direct access to the web data. From the analysis, the following recommendations for the design of digital dictionaries are suggested: maintain consistency among all structural levels, retain the appearance across different editions or versions, fully utilize navigation and search tools, enable access to the relational database, create comprehensive, logical and intuitive hyperlinks within the lexical repertoire or utilize the complete iconstructure.
