The presence of the sea in multimodal books aimed at children and young readers offers a privileged
pathway for exploring symbolic and cultural imaginaries, as well as for introducing knowledge about
marine ecosystems. From an ecocritical perspective, many literary works construct narrative worlds
that represent the sea through symbolic and aesthetic approaches, stimulating imagination and reader sensitivity. At the same time, within the framework of the 2030Agenda, nonfiction books contribute to
eco-literacy and to the understanding ofcurrent environmental challenges. However, despite growing
editorial interest in both areas, there is still limited contextualised research that examines which representations ofthe sea actually reach young readers through public libraries. This article analyses the
presence and diversity of multimodalworks that incorporate the marineworld within the children's and
young adult collections of three libraries in the Municipal Public Library Network of Cádiz. To this end, a descriptive methodology is employed, combining documentary and content analysis to classify the
works according to their format, modality, and type of marine representation. The results identify their
place within the collections, the predominant discourses, and the contribution of these works to literary
and environmental education.
