Calmet y el vampiro: un personaje del mal. Aproximación desde la antropología a la literaturización del fenómeno vampírico

Abstract

Dom Augustin Calmet escribió uno de los tratados más importantes del siglo XVIII, el Traité sur les Apparitions des Esprits, et sur les Vampires, ou les Revenans de Hongrie, de Moravie, &c. (1746). Si es interesante, este intelectual, es por su contribución a la consolidación y posterior literaturización del mito del vampiro, ya que sus relatos pueden ser considerados materia literaria que contribuirá a la representación de la malignidad del personaje. Empezará su disertación identificando revenants, vampires y oupires, hombres muertos que después de un tiempo considerable salen de sus tumbas e inquietan a los vivos, provocándoles la muerte. Partiremos, pues, del análisis de los relatos del abad, ahondando en aquellas características malignas que conferirán al actante su idiosincrasia, para, posteriormente, establecer cómo muchas de las particularidades que ya plasmaba Calmet respecto a los revenants fueron heredadas por los autores que crearán el personaje literario en el siglo XIX.

If this intellectual is of interest, it is for his contribution to the consolidation and posterior literary interpretation of the vampire myth, as his stories can be considered literary material that contributes to the representation of the malignancy of the character. The dissertation will start by identifying revenants, dead men that, after a considerable time leave their graves and frighten the living, provoking death. Then it will move on to the analysis of the Abbot’s stories, looking in depth at the malignant characteristics that will confer the idiosyncrasy of the actant. It will then establish, that these characteristics and many other peculiarities already expressed by Calmet regarding the revenants, were later inherited by the authors that created the literary character in the 19th century
