Abstract

Environmental education feels the need to adjust to the anthropogenic position of the 20th and 21st centuries that led to changes in the environment. To understand this changing environment, it is increasingly necessary to study it in order to bring education closer to awareness and change of habits. The objective of this study was to analyze the evolution of the theoretical conception of the environment and the teaching about it during the last fifty years. For this, a bibliographical study and a case study referring to the training of teachers in charge of teaching environmental issues in Uruguay were carried out. The dimensional and plural complexity of the environmental theme was discovered and a challenging scenario that requires the recognition of at least twelve environmental dimensions which need to be recognized for positioning during environmental education and the training of professionals in environmental education.
