This study analyses the use of English modal verbs within the field of Corpus Linguistics
and second language acquisition. The general objective is to analyse and compare the
modal verbs usage by native speakers and learners at three advanced proficiency levels
(B2, C1 and C2). The research follows a corpus-based methodology with the use of the
British National Corpus (BNC) and the Open Cambridge Learner Corpus (OCLC),
together with both quantitative and qualitative data. The results show a continuous
underuse of modal verbs by learners in the respective levels. The findings underline
challenges when learning modality and address the adaptation of pedagogical approaches
with real language data.
