La recepción temprana de Macpherson en España: las traducciones osiánicas de José Marchena

Abstract

Este artículo se centra en la temprana recepción de la literatura de James Macpherson en España. Se mencionan las traducciones de José Antonio Ortiz Rojo (1788) y de Pedro Montengón (1800) y se registran algunas referencias sobre la literatura osiánica en la prensa del momento. La parte central del trabajo investiga las traducciones de José Marchena consistentes en dos poemas completos («La guerra de Caros» y «La guerra de Inistona»), seis fragmentos (procedentes de «Los cantos de Selma», «Carrictura» y «Cartón») publicados en Variedades de Ciencias, Literatura y Artes en 1804 y otra composición completa extensa titulada «Beratón». Una vez clasificadas, se aborda la temática y se determina la forma de traducir del sevillano mediante sendos análisis traductológicos. Finalmente se mencionan otros autores posteriores a Marchena cuyas obras evidencian y refrendan el interés por la literatura osiánica en España.

This paper focuses on the early reception of James Macpherson’s literature in Spain. After remarking on the translations by José Antonio Ortiz Rojo (1788) and Pedro Montengón (1800), some references to Ossianic literature in the press of the era are cited. The central part of this work examines José Marchena’s translations, which consist of two complete poems («The War of Caros» and «The War of Inis-thona»), six fragments (from «The Song of Selma», «Carric-thura» and «Carthon») published in the journal Variedades de Ciencias, Literatura y Artesin 1804, and another complete, extensive composition entitled «Berrathon». Once these have been classified, it discusses the pieces’ subject matter and the Sevillian’s way of translating by means of comparative analyses. Finally, other authors are mentioned who wrote after Marchena and whose works evidence interest in Ossianic literature in Spain.
